5.0
At Stotfold Dental Clinic, we welcome children and the whole family for routine check-ups, preventive care and gentle dental treatment in a warm, relaxed environment. We recommend children attend every 6 months to help monitor development, prevent dental problems early and build confidence at the dentist.
Our paediatric dental services include children’s check-ups, fluoride varnish, fissure sealants and treatment for tooth decay in children. We also support nervous young patients with a calm, reassuring approach across our clinics in Stotfold, Shefford and Melbourn, accessible to patients across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and nearby Hertfordshire areas.
Children are usually encouraged to visit the dentist when their first teeth appear, often from around six months old. Early appointments help children become familiar with the dental environment and allow parents to receive advice on caring for baby teeth at home.
Starting dental visits early can help children feel more comfortable attending regular check-ups as they grow, reducing the likelihood of dental anxiety later on. Most children are advised to attend check-ups every six to twelve months depending on their oral health needs.
At Stotfold Dental Clinic, children’s dental check-ups are tailored to your child’s age and needs. Appointments are designed to feel calm, friendly and comfortable.
During the appointment, we may:
We explain everything clearly and parents are welcome to stay throughout the appointment.
Many children feel nervous about visiting the dentist, especially during early appointments. Our team takes a gentle, patient approach to help children feel safe and relaxed.
We never rush treatment and always work at your child’s pace. For anxious children, early visits may simply involve getting used to the surgery and meeting the team before any treatment takes place.
If your child is nervous, let us know when booking so we can allow extra time and adapt the appointment to suit their needs.

Dental anxiety in children is something we deal with every day and approach with patience and understanding. We never rush or push a child into anything they are not comfortable with. Appointments can be structured to start with just a look around the surgery or a sit in the chair, without any clinical work taking place at all. Over time, the vast majority of nervous children become comfortable, confident and even enthusiastic dental patients. Please mention your child’s anxiety when booking so we can allocate the right amount of time.
Fissure sealants are a thin, protective coating applied to the deep grooves on the biting surfaces of back teeth, where food and bacteria tend to accumulate and cause decay. They are one of the most effective preventive paediatric dental treatments available and are particularly recommended for children’s permanent molars shortly after they erupt, typically between six and seven years of age and again between eleven and thirteen. Your child’s dentist will advise whether sealants are appropriate at their check-up.
The interval between check-ups varies depending on your child’s age, the state of their teeth and their individual risk of developing tooth decay. Most children benefit from a check-up every six to twelve months. Your child’s dentist will recommend the most appropriate recall interval at the end of each appointment, based on their individual needs.
Absolutely. Parents and carers are always welcome to stay with their child throughout their dental appointment. For many children, especially younger patients, having a familiar face nearby helps them feel more comfortable and relaxed. Older children who prefer more independence can also be accommodated.
