Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, removes infection from inside a tooth when the dental pulp has been damaged by deep decay, injury or infection. By cleaning and sealing the root canals, we can often save your natural tooth and help avoid extraction.

What is root canal treatment and when is it needed?

Each tooth contains a soft tissue called the pulp, which sits inside the crown and root canals of the tooth. The pulp contains nerves and blood vessels and, in a healthy tooth, plays a role in tooth development. In a fully developed tooth, it can be removed without affecting the tooth’s function.

Root canal treatment is needed when the pulp becomes infected or irreversibly inflamed, most commonly due to:

Deep tooth decay that has reached the pulp chamber
A cracked or fractured tooth that has exposed the inner tissue
A leaking or failing filling that has allowed bacteria to enter
Dental trauma such as a knock or injury that damages the pulp
A dental abscess or recurring infection around the root tip

If left untreated, a pulp infection can spread to the surrounding bone, cause a dental abscess, and ultimately result in tooth loss. Root canal treatment removes the source of infection, resolves pain and gives the tooth the best chance of being retained long term.

Is root canal treatment painful?

Root canal treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic, and most patients experience little to no discomfort during the procedure. Modern techniques make treatment much more comfortable than many people expect, and for most patients, the procedure provides relief from the pain caused by an infected tooth.

Root canal treatment helps preserve your natural tooth, which can be better for your long-term oral health and bite function. Assessment & Diagnosis

Your dentist examines the tooth, takes X-rays and confirms whether root canal treatment is needed. A treatment plan and cost estimate will be discussed before treatment begins.

Cleaning & Sealing the Tooth

Under local anaesthetic, the infected pulp is removed and the root canals are cleaned and sealed. Treatment may be completed over one or two appointments depending on the tooth.

Restoration & Aftercare

The tooth is restored with a filling or crown where recommended, followed by aftercare advice to support healing.

How much does root canal treatment cost?

Root canal treatment starts from £299 for anterior teeth, from £399 for premolars and from £625 for molars. If you need an emergency appointment to begin treatment urgently, this starts from £200. A temporary filling, if required between appointments, starts from £150. All fees are guide prices and will be confirmed following your assessment. We also offer finance options on selected treatments — please ask our team for details.

Do I definitely need root canal treatment, or could the tooth just be extracted?

Extraction is always an option, but wherever possible we recommend saving the natural tooth. Root canal treatment, when successful, can keep a tooth functioning for many years – sometimes for life. Losing a tooth creates a gap that, if not replaced, can cause the surrounding teeth to drift and the jawbone to shrink over time. Replacing a tooth with a dental implant or bridge also carries its own cost and complexity. Root canal treatment is often the most conservative and cost-effective long-term solution.

How many appointments will I need?

This depends on the tooth and the severity of the infection. Anterior (front) tooth root canals are often completed in a single appointment. Premolars and molars, which have more complex canal systems, typically require two appointments. If there is significant infection present, we may place an antibacterial dressing and ask you to return once the tooth has settled before completing the procedure. Your dentist will give you a clear estimate at your consultation.

Will I need a crown after root canal treatment?

In most cases, root canal treated back teeth benefit from a crown to protect the remaining tooth structure. Back teeth endure significant biting forces and, once the pulp has been removed, the tooth can become more brittle over time. A crown significantly reduces the risk of the tooth cracking or fracturing in the future. Front teeth that have sufficient structure remaining may only need a filling. Your dentist will advise on the most appropriate restoration for your situation.

What happens if I leave an infected tooth untreated?

A dental infection will not resolve on its own. Without treatment, the infection will continue to spread through the pulp and into the surrounding bone, potentially causing a dental abscess, significant swelling and, in severe cases, a systemic infection. The tooth will eventually become non-restorable and require extraction. Antibiotics can help manage an acute infection in the short term, but they do not treat the underlying cause — only root canal treatment or extraction can resolve the problem definitively.
